Spontaneous abortions occur in various animals. For example, in sheep, it can be caused by stress or physical exertion, such as pushing doors or being chased by dogs. [255] In cows, abortion can be caused by contagious diseases such as brucellosis or Campylobacter, but can often be controlled by vaccination. [256] Consumption of pine needles can also cause abortions in cows. [257] [258] Several plants, including broom grass, skunk, poisonous hemlock and tree tobacco, are known to cause fetal malformations and abortions in cattle:[259]:45–46 and in sheep and goats. [259]: 77-80 In horses, a fetus may be aborted or absorbed if it has fatal White`s syndrome (congenital intestinal agglionosis). Foal embryos that are homozygous to the dominant white gene (WW) are theoretically aborted or absorbed before birth. [260] Many species of sharks and rays often suffer stress-related abortions during capture. [261] Model and TV personality Chrissy Teigen revealed at a conference and on social media in September that discussions following the Supreme Court decision made her realize that a miscarriage she posted in 2020 was indeed an abortion. Her fetus had “absolutely no chance” in the second trimester and her own life was in danger.
Her announcement — The Hollywood Reporter said she had “confessed” it — inspired actress Jenny Mollen to announce that she, too, had undergone abortions to treat two miscarriages. The regulations also prohibited Title X-funded family planning clinics from lobbying for laws that advocated or improved access to abortion, and they required that these clinics be “physically and financially separate” from abortion activities. While a family planning agency can still conduct abortion-related activities, it cannot use federal funds to fund such activities. Presiding Judge William H. Rehnquist, author of the court`s opinion, disagreed with the plaintiffs` claims — several family planning agencies — that federal regulations violated a woman`s right to decide whether or not to terminate her pregnancy. It pointed out that the due process clause does not generally confer a positive right to State aid. The government has no constitutional obligation to subsidize abortion and can validly choose to fund “childbirth instead of abortion.” Rehnquist noted that a woman`s right to seek medical advice outside of a Title X-funded agency remains “unrestricted.” The government and abortion rights groups have responded to the rise in violence in two ways: by examining existing laws to find those that can be used to investigate and prosecute violent groups and individuals, and by creating new laws specifically addressing access to abortion clinics. In 1993, women`s rights groups sought to use existing civil rights legislation as a precedent in Bray v.
Alexandria Women`s Health Clinic, 506 U.S. 263, 113 S. Ct. 753, 122 L. Ed. 2d 34 (1993). They did not succeed. The Supreme Court ruled that a nineteenth-century federal civil rights law (42 U.S.C.A. § 1985[3]) aimed at protecting African Americans from the Ku Klux Klan could not be used to prevent anti-abortion protesters from blocking abortion clinics. Originally enacted as part of the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871, the law was specifically aimed at combating mob violence and vigilante justice against African Americans.
In many places where abortion is illegal or carries strong social stigma, medical coverage of abortion is unreliable. [137] For this reason, estimates of the frequency of abortions must be made without determining the certainty of the standard error. [25] The number of abortions performed worldwide appears to have remained stable in recent years: 41.6 million in 2003 and 43.8 million in 2008. [25] The abortion rate worldwide was 28 per 1,000 women per year, compared to 24 per 1,000 women per year in developed countries and 29 per 1,000 women per year in developing countries. [25] The same 2012 study showed that in 2008, the estimated percentage of abortions of known pregnancies worldwide was 21%, of which 26% in developed countries and 20% in developing countries. [25] Unsafe abortions are one of the leading causes of injury and death among women worldwide. Although the data is inaccurate, it is estimated that about 20 million unsafe abortions are performed each year, 97% of which take place in developing countries. [9] Unsafe abortions are estimated to cause millions of injuries. [9] [132] Estimates of deaths vary according to methodology, ranging from 37,000 to 70,000 over the past decade; [9] [21] [133] Deaths from unsafe abortions account for about 13% of all maternal deaths. [134] The World Health Organization estimates that mortality has declined since the 1990s.
[135] In order to reduce the number of unsafe abortions, public health organizations have generally advocated focusing on legalizing abortion, training medical personnel, and ensuring access to reproductive health services. [136] MVA, also known as “mini-aspiration” and “menstrual extraction” or EVA, can be used in early pregnancy when cervical dilation is not required. Dilation and curettage (D&C) refers to the opening of the cervix (dilation) and the removal of tissue (curettage) by aspiration or sharp instruments. D&C is a standard gynecological procedure performed for a variety of reasons, including examination of the lining of the uterus for possible malignancy, examination for abnormal bleeding, and abortion. The World Health Organization recommends spicy curettage only when aspiration aspiration is not available. [76] Between March 1993 and late 1994, five abortion clinic workers were murdered by anti-abortion fanatics. Dr. David Gunn was shot and killed on March 10, 1993 outside an abortion clinic in Pensacola, Florida, by Michael Griffin, who was sentenced to life in prison.
In August 1994, Dr. John Bayard Britton, 69, who had replaced Gunn as North Florida County physician, and his escort, James Barrett, 74, were repeatedly shot in the face with a shotgun as their car entered the parking lot of the Ladies Clinic in Pensacola. Minutes later, police arrested Paul Hill, an anti-abortion extremist. President Bill Clinton called the murders of Britton and Barrett domestic terrorism. Hill was executed in September 2003. In December 1994, in perhaps the most horrific incident of all, John Salvi killed two people and wounded five others when he opened fire at two family planning clinics in Boston.
