The Office of the Police Legal Adviser acts as legal adviser to the Chief of Police on the policy of the Department. In addition, the Office of the Police Legal Counsel provides legal advice to police personnel regarding state, federal and city orders, as well as updates and training on pending court decisions and other legal matters. As legal counsel to law enforcement agencies, we provide the agency with ongoing advice, guidance and representation from the sheriff or chief of police. We help examine and analyze legal issues faced by managers and supervisors when managing their agencies, and provide interpretations of court decisions and legislation that could affect the functioning of a law enforcement agency. We advise the agency to reduce the risk of litigation and, if necessary, to defend itself against lawsuits.
