People with disabilities need access to justice more than ever. By further improving your communication and interaction skills and strategies with people with disabilities, you can serve and make a difference in the justice system and those who need it. Title III of the ADA and its California counterparts require certain companies (including attorneys) that provide services to the public to also provide goods and services to people with disabilities in the most integrated environment possible. Individuals can also file complaints with the Attorney General, who can sue to end the discrimination and receive monetary damages and penalties. However, communicating and interacting with people with disabilities may require different strategies and skills to build trust, communicate, and ensure that insults are not inadvertently given through the use of language that people with disabilities find offensive. Medical living wills (powers of appointment, living wills and medical prescriptions) There are several legal documents that every adult should understand and have. Medical living wills protect a person`s rights in case they are unable to communicate on their own. Your ability to establish or improve forms of communication with people with disabilities can help retain existing customers and attract new ones. Given the number of people with disabilities in California and the United States, you are more likely to represent clients with disabilities, meet people with disabilities in your work as a lawyer, and meet people with disabilities in your community. Individuals are sometimes afraid to say the wrong thing, so they say nothing at all or are clumsy in communicating or interacting, further marginalizing people with disabilities. Once a person with a disability arrives in your office, your reception area or your counters or offices where services are provided should have an accessible area that does not exceed 36 inches above the floor and at least 36 inches long. It should have clear space in front of the accessible surface, which is 30 inches by 38 inches and allows a customer in a wheelchair to shoot next to it. People with disabilities have been insulted, inaccurately labeled and negative images projected on them.
